Ease and Presence in a Climate-Changing World
Lunch and Learn series presented by Rabbi Ora Nitkin-Kaner, on Zoom
It's hard to think of a more contemporary spiritual question.
And yet, our tradition is dotted with ancestors who wrestled with many of the same underlying issues: How do I grieve without losing myself to grief? How do I act from a place of hope? How do I imagine more than just loss? How do I trust in the future?
In this five-week Lunch and Learn series, we will begin to answer these questions. In each class we will study a Talmudic or aggadic midrash* in translation, and then creatively deconstruct and rewrite the text until we’ve made new midrash for our time.
Each class creatively engages with a different spiritual challenge of (climate) change, with an attitude of thoughtful play. Join us as we journey together from narrowness into expansion, fear into love, loss into possibility, and beyond. We will engage in text study, creative writing and group sharing.
This series will help participants:
- Experience Jewish text as a site where pressing contemporary issues can be meaningfully explored, and deepen knowledge of familiar biblical myths through Talmudic and aggadic midrash
- Bring compassionate attention to their own reactions to the climate crisis, and offer inquiry, creativity and play as possible responses
- Decrease numbness and isolation by deepening awareness of spiritual resources within the context of Jewish community
- Explore creative writing as a tool for authentically engaging with the spiritual challenges of climate change.
*Aggadic Midrash is a term that refers to rabbinic interpretations and narratives of the non-legal parts of the Hebrew Bible
