Introducing Zazim: Hands-On Action

Let's Embody Our Jewish Values Through Action
September 1, 2026

Zazim (Hebrew slang for "let's go") is a movement dedicated to transforming Jewish life at CoM through active, hands-on engagement with environmental stewardship. Rooted in the belief that “the hand teaches the heart,” Zazim empowers our synagogue community to care for the earth as an expression of Jewish values and reverence for the sacred space of the synagogue.

What Does Zazim Do?

Zazim inspires congregants to roll up their sleeves and take meaningful action, including:

  1. Reducing CoM’s carbon footprint with improved low-energy lighting, energy-saving appliances and reduced mowing on the property
  2. Recycling metals to reduce waste, conserve resources and earn money
  3. Mitigating invasive species to protect local ecosystems
  4. Planting native, pollinator-friendly vegetation to support bees and butterflies
  5. Maintaining rain gardens to manage storm water and nurture biodiversity
  6. Reducing single-use plastics throughout the synagogue building
  7. Preparing for our solar panel installation which will save money and harness clean, renewable energy

Each project is an opportunity to embody the Jewish imperative of environmental stewardship—bal tashchit—which calls us to avoid waste and protect creation. By engaging directly with these efforts, participants deepen their connection to Jewish tradition and to each other, making environmental action a living part of synagogue life.

Why Zazim?

Zazim is more than a set of green initiatives; it is a movement that binds action to intention. By working with our hands, we cultivate awareness, responsibility and love for the world around us—values at the heart of Jewish teaching.

Every effort serves the sacred space of the synagogue, ensuring it remains a place of holiness, learning and sustainability for generations to come.
