Congregation of Moses High Holidays Questions and Answers
How long are services?
Services on the first night of Rosh Hashanah last about an hour. On the second night services are roughly 40 minutes long. Rosh Hashanah morning services begin at 9:00 am and go until 1:00 or 1:30 pm. Kol Nidre services last about two hours, and will begin promptly at 6:30 pm. Please note that latecomers will not be seated during the Kol Nidre prayer.
Yom Kippur daytime services tend to last until about 2:00, when we break for a few hours. Evening services resume at 6:00 pm and we usually conclude Yom Kippur about 8:00 pm.
Members and all guests are welcome to meet and greet one another after Rosh Hashanah services on Oct 2 for a dessert table lovingly prepared by our own members. At the conclusion of Yom Kippur on Oct 12, there will be a Break-the-Fast prepared by Men's Club. These events are free and all of our guests are welcome.
How do I get a ticket or reservation?
Call the synagogue office at 269-342-5463. Students receive a complimentary ticket but should bring their college ID.
How should I dress?
Men are encouraged to wear a jacket, tie and slacks. Women should choose dresses, skirts, or nice slacks, as individual tastes dictate. Men and women are encouraged to bring their tallitot (prayer shawls) and head coverings but you can also use the synagogue's supply. Women are asked to cover their head if they are invited onto the bima (stage). Many people choose to follow the tradition of wearing non-leather shoes on Yom Kippur.
Where should I sit?
Some members of CoM have reserved seats for High Holy Day services, and these are marked with blue tape on the seat backs. Other members prefer open seating and sit in any unoccupied, unreserved seats. Guests and visitors are welcome to sit in any open, unreserved seats (those without blue tape on the seat backs).
